SPINAL INJECTIONS

Specialty Overview

Doctors often start with non-surgical methods to treat back pain.  In cases where the patient finds no relief from non-surgical methods, surgery may be recommended.

Spine degenerative conditions such as herniated disc, spinal stenosis, and many others may result in back pain due to the compression of spinal nerves.  This pain or numbness may extend to other parts of the body such as hips, buttocks, and legs.

Epidural spinal injection is a non-surgical treatment option utilized for relieving back pain. Spine degenerative conditions such as herniated disc, spinal stenosis, and many others may induce back pain due to the compression of the associated spinal nerves.  The epidural steroid injection administers mediation to irritated or inflamed nerves in order to decrease inflammation. This is performed by physicians with training and expertise, often while using fluoroscopy.

What to expect

These injections are done on an outpatient basis.  Patients may continue to feel some back pain immediately after the injection, as it takes 24-72 hours before pain relief.

Injections provide pain relief which helps the patient tolerate physical therapy, an important aspect to address his or her injury or back condition.
